Tourniquet (alternate version)

17.5 x 17.5"

etching with aquatint, waterbite and woodcut on Stonehenge Natural

Edward Monovich’s idyllic suburban landscapes investigate the relationships between privilege and geopolitical suffering by culling from advertisments and children’s stories. The brand names worn by the figures propagate a mesmerizing cycle of consumption and an artificial sense of progress. But these pastoral landscapes are marred by the presence of hovering drones, landmines and poison ivy, reminding the viewer that things are not so idyllic afterall.
Today, Strawberry Shortcake, Winnie the Pooh and G.I. Joe step out of their storybooks and onto cereal boxes, candy wrappers and the internet to sell dubious products and messages. Characters’ original narratives are coopted by marketing strategies. As a result, children identify both their favorite characters and themselves with specific brand names. Monovich’s interpretation of popular figures subvert their advertising context; they become insurgents. Hidden meanings are exposed.
